If you think sandwiches are boring, you haven’t pigged out at Wally’s Deli, “Home of the Hog.”
Wally’s doesn’t skimp on the meat, and round rolls mean the meat and cheese are more evenly distributed than in a hoagie. Each Hog has its own dressing selected to best complement its flavor. Some contain homemade Thousand Island dressing, others have sauces made with horseradish or jalapeño sauce.
Owned by Susan and Walter “Wally” Roberts, Wally’s Deli has been around for nearly 24 years. She runs the Emmaus shop he runs the Allentown shop, with their daughter Alisha. Both places are decorated with pigs, many of them gifts from customers.
Among Specialty Hogs containing several kinds of meat are the Hoofty, Porky, Wilber, Curley, Squealer and Oinker.
Despite their names, not every Hog contains ham or bacon- the Tommy, for example, contains turkey. And the most popular is the meatless Veggie.
Wally’s began as just another hoagie shop when it opened at another Emmaus location in 1989. But the couple had a conflict with another restaurant in the same strip mall that already had hoagies on its menu. Facing a possible lawsuit, they had to change their sandwich. The Hog was born. Now they say what happened “was a blessing in disguise.”
